Washington County completed the 2016 season with a 6-4 record. With their 5-1 region record and a third place finish in Class 2A region one, the Bulldogs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Washington County's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Samson by a score of 12-42. The high-scoring Washington County offense ranked 24th in the AHSAA. They averaged 40.6 points a game. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Washington County has gone a combined 73-19. Their 79.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 2A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Washington County has managed to compile a record of 192-110. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 2A and 66th in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 1999. Al Earnest leaves Washington County after just two seasons with a 16-7 record including 2-2 in the playoffs. He accepted a position with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in South Alabama. Saraland assistant coach Devin Roberts has been named the new head football coach at Washington County. He is a native of Washington County. Roberts has been an assistant at Saraland and Auburn recently. The Washington County Bulldogs will play in Class 2A region one during the 2017 season. The Bulldogs will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region one this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2004 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2017. Senior Austin Kinsey returns after rushing for 639 yards on 79 carries and scoring 8 touchdowns. The Bulldogs open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Millry on Thursday, August 31 at Jordan Wilcox Stadium. Last year the Millry Wildcats finished with an overall record of 4-7 and in fourth place in Class 1A region one. The Wildcats lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Georgiana by a score of 28-6. Washington County and Millry have met a total of 87 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 59-24-4 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2016 with Washington County winning by a score of 35-0.
